Vitamin Supplementation after Bariatric Surgery

Because the quantity of food you can consume has been dramatically reduced, lifelong vitamin and mineral supplementation is NECESSARY to prevent deficiencies.

We recommend that you take the following vitamins in the appropriate dosages per day:

Adult Strength Multivitamin
(chewable, liquid, or capsule only)
Follow dosage instructions per label.
Calcium Citrate with Vitamin D
(chewable, liquid, or capsule only)
1500 – 1800 mg per day
B-12
(sublingual, capsule, or liquid)
1000 mcg per day
Iron
(chewable, capsule, or liquid only)
Men:  18 mg per day
Women:  29 mg per day

Below is a sample schedule for daily vitamin supplementation:

Guidelines:

  • Do not take calcium and iron at the same time.
  • Do not take fiber products with your vitamins.
